Naomi Andrade Smith has been a chef and caterer for 13 years. Her interest in coffee (growing, roasting, consuming) began during trips to Veracruz, Mexico, where coffee is an integral part of daily life. The cool hills surrounding the state capital, Xalapa, are a prime coffee growing region. Down in the lowlands on the coast, the port city of Veracruz boasts of the most popular place in all of Mexico to see and be seen, the 150 year-old coffee shop, La Parroquia (The Parrish). Further south is an area which was settled by free blacks -- Mocambo Beach. Mocambo is a zone located in the greater agricultural region of Veracruz where the drinking of coffee is traditional.
Naomi started roasting coffee in 2006. She approaches coffee roasting from the perspective of a chef -- with an acute sense of time and temperature control. Café Mocambo's Yanga roast is deep and earthy with chocolate overtones. She sells her coffee at her recently opened take-out in Columbia City, Villa Victoria.
To ensure freshness, our coffee is carefully roasted and packaged in small batches. With the goal of reducing bitterness and acidity, we gently roast our 100% Arabica beans to a turn.
